<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">Artist and sculptor Lewis
Bryden will give a talk at 7 pm on Wednesday, July 24 on the making of his
bronze sculpture, “Nature as Muse,” which is a permanent installation in the
Mallinckrodt Garden at View. The talk will be held in Gould Hall at View, where
Bryden will present a series of short videos that show the different stages of
making this sculpture. There is no admission charge to attend the talk.</span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">Bryden, who has been a
professional artist for 30 years, used a process called “lost wax casting” to
create “Nature as Muse.” </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">“I chose the lost wax method,
in which the finished clay sculpture is remolded in wax, coated with ceramic
material, and then poured with molten bronze. Everywhere the wax was, the
bronze now takes its place,” he said.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">Bryden created the full-size clay
sculpture and then collaborated with other artisans to create the bronze cast.
The process is complicated and can permanently destroy the sculpture if
anything goes wrong. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">“[The process] involves many
steps of repeated creation, destruction and recreation all of which are
beautiful in themselves,” he said. “The process is, in a way, a perfect example
of the need for communal effort and mutual trust.”</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">The videos that Bryden will
show demonstrate the lost wax process and highlight the skills involved in
creating such a large sculpture. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">As part of the creative process,
Bryden created a maquette, or small scale model of the sculpture, which is of a
young girl reaching up to a bird. “It helps the artist and others to visualize
the sculpture and to identify problems early,” he said. He also did a
portrait study as an exercise to explore the character of the young girl. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">The portrait has been donated
to View’s permanent collection, and the maquette has been given to View as a
raffle to raise money for View. Both the portrait and the maquette will be on
display before the talk and raffle tickets will be available for purchase. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif";">Bryden is well-known as a
landscape painter, but in the last three years he has turned his attention to
three-dimensional work in marble and bronze.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>“Nature as Muse” was a gift to View last summer by Bryden and his wife
Betsy Mallinckrodt Bryden to commemorate the lives of Betsy’s grandparents,
Elizabeth Elliot and Edward Mallinckrodt, Jr., who were longtime summer
residents of Old Forge and avid art collectors. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">
</span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Have you ever
thought about home grown attractions? I have and it never ceases to amaze me
how local people often times take them for granted. Maybe it’s not so much that
they are taken for granted but that it takes time to really appreciate such
things and time is a precious commodity. In the workaday world locals pass by
what others travel miles, spend days and pay to experience without ever
noticing what they are missing. Time is the key component in this scenario and
in every other facet of our modern lives.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>There are a great
many attractions here in this recreational oriented area in which we live but
finding the time to enjoy them is a huge problem. In every day and every way
technology is making it harder to apportion our time. The older people get the
greater become the demands on their time. I have just recently become more cognizant
of that fact. The past weekend of the eighth and ninth brought that fact home
loud and clear. We had three different occasions that we wanted to be a part of
and agonize over before deciding to split our allegiance. My wife went one way
to a family obligation and I to the community day invitation to View. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>View, is the Arts
Center, as most people who frequent the area know. It came about as a result of
a great deal of planning and hard work by many people. Of those people none
deserves more credit than Miriam Kashiwa. The original Arts Center location
across from View stands out in my memory as a happy place where my
grandchildren went to preschool. It is being carried on as part of the
activities at View. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>It was my first
opportunity to visit the center and I was impressed as I am sure all others
viewing it for the first time are. I have to admit however that I was not
surprised because to use an old Adirondack expression its predecessor was no
cotton sock outfit. Impressive in every aspect is the way I would describe it. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The architecture
interested me almost as much as the exhibits. The workmanship was grandiose to
say the least. The planning and layout of the exhibits and the flow from them
to the other functions is a revelation. Professionalism is what I would have to
say it exudes, and now for the art work.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>I could not
pretend to know how to describe the artwork. It was incredible. How any human
being can create the paintings and woodwork on display is unimaginable. The
pottery exhibit and workshop followed along the same lines. I have never before
been exposed to such a variety of art on the scale exhibited there. I was truly
impressed. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>My favorite room was the one dedicated to
Hank Kashiwa with its display of Adirondack flora and fauna. I could relate to
that more naturally than the art work, but that in no way diminished my
appreciation for it. Hank was one of my favorite people. I regret that I did
not get to know him better. But once again that all goes back to the matter of
time. We both had growing families and commitments that came ahead of
everything else. </span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The people that
created and made View can be extremely proud. Not many if any communities the
size of ours can boast of anything as professional. It has to be seen. To waste
something as beautiful would surely be a sin.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">
<span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Old Forge has
more of one thing than any other community I ever knew and that is spirit. View
is not the only attraction worth seeing. They are all worth a local taking the time
to see from the inside what our seasonal visitors do. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 10pt;">

<span style="background-color: transparent; line-height: 1.15; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #222222;">This entry is a little bit late. We've been pretty busy, and there have been a lot of changes here at View. I'll fill you in on the details next week. But for now, here is the last post I wrote:
</span><span style="line-height: normal; white-space: normal;">June 3rd, 2013<br />Day 13<br />I have known for a while that View was going to be hosting a local prom, and that staff members would be needed to supervise their use of our space. Events like proms are the kind of thing I am used to from my years of working for the student activities department of Pratt Institute. There we had a couple of sorority dinners and dances in our student union space where I was in charge of monitoring their use of our tables, chairs, and sound equipment while also making sure they cleaned up after themselves. I imagined that this prom would be similar so I volunteered to help out. Though to be honest, previous experience was not the only reason I volunteered.</span><span style="line-height: normal; white-space: normal;"><br /></span><span style="line-height: normal; white-space: normal;">I did not go to my own prom in high school. Which is not something I regret. My late teens were more troubled and awkward than most, and knowing what I was like back then going to prom would have been a horrible experience. But who I am now would probably have enjoyed it. And I have always been a little bit curious as to what a prom is actually like outside of portrayals in popular culture. Additionally a good friend of mine owed me a date after I had accompanied her to her friend’s wedding. A job I know well, a friend to dance with, and getting to see the real thing. Plenty of reasons to volunteer.</span><span style="line-height: normal; white-space: normal;"><br /></span><span style="line-height: normal; white-space: normal;">Sadly, my date had to cancel on me. But other than that the evening went quite smoothly. The kids were there for set-up early and got the job done with time to spare. The DJ they hired sounded pretty good in our space and the kids danced the night away. Though I question the taste of some of the songs played. <span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 15.0px;"><br /></span></span></span>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 15.0px;"><br />
I was excited for Sunday’s performance of Great American Songbook as done by the Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts as it was the first time I would be truly put to task as the Performance Intern. The first time I would actually be setting up lights, sound, and bar for an act here at View. Load in was scheduled to start sharply at 10am, but was delayed. By around 11am the sound tech from the ALCA had arrived and we began to load in some equipment.<br />
<br />
Here at View we have some recently purchased QSC K12 speakers, and Presonus Studiolive soundboard. Excellent equipment for a performance space like Gould Hall. The sound tech had apparently been working several venues which did not have their own audio systems and was very relieved to see not only that he would not be required to unload his own soundboard and speakers. We disconnected channels 1-5 in the sound booth and did a direct input line to his wireless microphones. <br />
<br />
As part of my in-office work I have been reading the manual on our Presonus board, and have learned several things. This is a unique system in that it does not have separate frequency gain knobs for each input channel, but has selection button on each channel which links to a single more expansive chain of adjustment knobs. This gives you more options for each sound input that are clear and easy to read without taking up more space on the board. This whole system is something I have yet to toy with myself, though I was able to instruct the ALCA tech on this feature.<br />
<br />
The performance itself was quite stellar. I will admit, I am not the biggest fan of musicals but the performers did such an exceptional job as to even get me to smile and hum along. I particularly enjoyed one young woman’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. In addition to the songs, the pianist told the audience about the composers, some history, and humorous anecdotes, which added to the experience and drew the listener deeper into the songs, watching for specific lyric or melody structures which the various composers were known for.<br />
<br />
Coming up on June 7, at 7:30om we have the <a href="http://www.viewarts.org/index.php/performances/upcoming/music/item/133-nicki-parrott-rossano-sportiello-trio-with-ed-metz-on-drums">International Jazz Trio</a>, a performance I am more excited for as it will be not only a fantastic opportunity to learn more about running an event, it is also a chance to hear some good tunes.<br />
<br />
This has been an excellent first week at the View, and I am looking forward to many more experiences like this.<br />

<blockquote>
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 15px;">Hello there!<br />
To all of the readers and attendees at the lovely View arts center I would like to introduce myself. My name is Nicholas Daniluk and I am one of the fresh new interns here. Specifically, I am the Performing Arts intern. I will be helping with lightboard, soundboard, and various other aspects of putting on the various acts you see here. So you most of my ramblings will be about the events we have coming up in Gould Hall, but will also be filling you in on some of the day to day details of an outsider learning about life in this mountain town.<br />
<br />
A little bit about me; I am originally from Dryden, New York, a small town outside of Ithaca and I graduated from Pratt Institute in 2011 with a bachelors in Fine Art, after completing the two year foundation program at Munson Williams Proctor in Utica, New York. My concentration was in drawing, and I have mostly been working with chalk pastels the past four years, though I have recently started working with oil paints again. You can find my work here.</span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12.0px;"> <<span style="color: blue;"><u><a href="http://facebook.com/nicholasromanoviii">http://facebook.com/nicholasromanoviii</a></u></span>> </span></span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="font-size: 15.0px;">. I am hoping to spend this summer gaining experience which will expand my career opportunities while also developing my portfolio for graduate school.<br />
<br />
This weekend will be my first day working a performance here at View; the Great American Songbook at 2pm. The Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts will be putting on a show with songs from American musicals from the 1920’s all the way to the 1960’s. Classic americana on memorial day eve. The performers will be bringing in most of their own sound equipment, so I believe I will mostly be working lights. But you never know what will happen, and everything that needs to be done. I will be sure to let you know how it goes, and what it’s like setting working with these, and all the other performers at View.</span></span></span></blockquote>

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">View will present Warren Miller’s ultimate ski and snowboard video <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">Flow State</i> on the first weekend in March.
There will be two showings, one with a spaghetti dinner. On Friday, March 1 at
7 pm, come see <i>Flow State</i> only or come see it on Saturday, March 2 and
enjoy a spaghetti dinner served from 6 pm to 7 pm, and the movie will start at
7 pm.<br />
<br />
Immerse yourself in the <i>Flow State</i> with Warren Miller Entertainment and
experience the ultimate winter from a lens of absolute clarity. If you saw last
year’s movie, “Like There’s No<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Tomorrow,” then you know you’re in for a treat. </span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The <i>Flow State</i> exists
anywhere crisp winter air shocks your lungs and sunlight refracts off
snowflakes. So buckle up, because Warren Miller’s 63rd annual ski and snowboard
film will take you into the zone…the moment…the groove…the center…the <i>Flow
State.</i> <br />
<br />
Warren Miller’s <i>Flow State</i> guides viewers to the top of the world’s most
striking peaks, taking you on an exhilarating journey across the globe to
Norway, Austria, California, Switzerland and beyond. The powder in Japan will
send you scrambling to tune-up your gear, the gravity in Telluride will have
you scheduling an avalanche refresher course, and the steeps in Alaska will
drive you to push a little harder during your next <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>workout. Winter is here, and it is time to
enter the <i>Flow State</i>…where the mountain meets the mind. <br />
<br />
<i>Flow State</i> showcases celebrated athletes including Colby West, Chris
Davenport, Jess McMillan and David Wise. Olympic gold medalist Ted Ligety takes
on Alaska’s mighty Chugach, Julian Carr bombs down Utah’s famed Wasatch, Jackie
Paaso explores the Norwegian Arctic, and Chris Anthony makes Warren Miller
history on 70-year-old, 10th Mountain Division ski equipment. <b><i><br />
</i></b><br />
Once again, Warren Miller raises the bar with <i>Flow State</i>, offering
filmgoers a magnitude of ski and snowboard action that can’t be matched
anywhere else. When asked about the film, director Max Bervy said, <i>“The Flow
State is a place where the impossible becomes possible – where time slows down
and a perfect moment becomes attainable. This film reveals what it is like to
be completely immersed in the present…completely immersed in the snow, in the
mountains, and in the enjoyment of winter.” <br />
</i><br />
Flow State is sponsored by McCauley Mountain, Holly Woodworking, and the Polar Bear
Ski Club. Film-only tickets on Friday, March 1 are $8. Film with spaghetti
dinner tickets on Saturday, March 2 are $12 in advance or $15 the day of the
show. Smith</strong> is on display in View’s Rosenau Gallery until
April 28 in conjunction with “The Wild Life” exhibit. A special focus
will be on her wildlife paintings created on turkey feathers. Although
the feathers will be featured, no surface is safe from her brush… she enjoys
painting on various surfaces such as tree fungi, saw blades, snowshoes, tin
ware, and wood.<br />
<br />
Maintaining a working studio gallery (originally a General Store) on the bank
of the Black River in Forestport, N.Y., Connie endeavors to create beautiful
Adirondack landscapes, still lifes, and wildlife art. She works in watercolor, and
acrylic, and she is also a print maker. Working on commission, she will paint
pictures of camps, homes, animals, people or whatever is needed. She
says, “My art is a source of never-ending joyous hours spent engaged in what I
love, and I consider myself one of the ‘ lucky ones’.”<br />
<br />
Born and raised in Clinton, N.Y., she majored in Art and studied at Pratt
Institute School of Interior Design, Brooklyn, N.Y. After marriage and
raising four sons, she worked as an Interior Designer and also free-lanced,
designing many showrooms and business interiors in New York state. Recently,
she has worked on redesigning and restoring a turn-of-the-century Adirondack
camp. <br />

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Over
the winter, the Arts Center/Old Forge moved across the road to a new,
custom-built, environmentally friendly facility featuring many upgrades and
lots more space. With all the changes and new things going on, the staff and
board members thought this would be a good time to consider giving the organization
a fresh new name. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">"We
want people to see us in a new light and with fresh eyes," said Executive
Director Jennifer Potter Hayes. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">The
announcement was made at a media open house held on Wednesday, May 18. The art
center's new name, "View," was chosen for its simplicity and because
the word conjures up visions of arts, artists, and the reason many visitors
come to the Adirondacks: to see the view. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Hayes
hopes the name will make people stop and think. The name is open to
interpretation and means different things to different people. For example,
works of regional and national artists are on view, viewers come to see the
view, workshop students come to create their own view. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">The
name is a reflection of all the new possibilities that the new facility
provides. "The organization has really been transformed," says Hayes.
"We moved from an 8,000 square foot building to a state-of-the-art 28,000
square foot building built specifically for the arts." <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">When
it was time to decide on a new name, the board quickly realized they didn't
have the expertise, and needed an objective opinion. Howard Fish of Points
North Communications was brought in as a consultant on the new name. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">"We
chose him because he has lots of experience in the Adirondacks, and we really liked
what he did at the Wild Center in Tupper Lake," says Hayes. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Fish
interviewed over 20 board members, long-time volunteers, and staff. He surveyed
artists, art center members, and people in town. He also pored over files
filled with the history of the 60-year old organization. As he digested all
this information, he noticed the word "view" kept popping up over and
over. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">"We
liked the simplicity of a one-word name," says Hayes. "We realized
the old name was a little too specific and really narrowed people's
perspective." <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">The
board was advised against using terms like "Adirondacks" or "Old
Forge" because although there is a strong base of local and regional
artists and patrons, the center is hoping people will recognize them on more of
a national level. "Our viewers, artists, students, instructors and
performers come from across the U.S and Canada, and I don't think everyone
realizes that," said Hayes. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Fish
also suggested that using the words "Arts Center" in the name would
cause people to make assumptions. Hayes agrees that it may narrows people's
view of what is offered. "Everyone has some sort of arts center where they
live, which gives them their own idea of what an art center is or should be,"
says Hayes, "but chances are, it's not the same as this." <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Jody
Pritchard, View's graphic artist, says the new name and simple logo are fun to
work with. "The clean lines make it good for layering," she says.
"It's like a lattice through which art can be viewed." <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Members
of the press were taken on an in depth tour of the new facility led by
Pritchard, Events Coordinator Elise Carlson, and Performing Arts Coordinator
Alan Saban. In the design of the new building, no detail was overlooked.
Flexibility is built into every space to make it very useful and to accommodate
almost any scenario. In the old building the gallery, performance space, and
events space were all one and the same, making it difficult to have more than
one thing going on at a time and really limited what could be offered.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">"Anytime
there was more than two things going on at once, it got crazy," says
Pritchard.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">It
is now possible for multiple exhibits, performances, workshops, and meetings to
take place simultaneously without disturbing each other, since each has their
own designated area in the building.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">On
any given day, visitors can find exhibitions in any or all of the five spacious
galleries. Gould Hall, with its sprung floors, state of the art lighting and
sound, retractable seating for 200, Steinway piano, and a "green
room" for performers will not only provide a venue for performances, but
also doubles as event and banquet space. The adjacent outdoor courtyard serves
as an extension of Gould Hall, providing an indoor-outdoor space for large
events, as well as a place to display "outdoor art" such as
sculptures. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">The
commercial kitchen will be used for catering and food preparation for various
events, and also as a space for culinary education. The studio wing houses
workshop space for anything from jewelry to pottery. The new pottery studio
features a large outdoor gas kiln, a glaze preparation room, and a spray booth.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Upstairs
there are more rooms for conferences and workshops, featuring room dividers
that can be opened and closed to accommodate different sized groups. Kinderwood
preschool has a suite that includes a restroom, storage, and office space. An
office area accommodates the majority of the staff, in a bright space that also
includes a lounge. Also upstairs is the lighting and sound booth for Gould
Hall.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Behind
the building is a large generator capable of powering the whole facility. In
the event of a long-term power outage or natural disaster, people can seek
shelter at View. The entire facility is heated and cooled by an energy
efficient geothermal system. The building will soon receive a Leadership in
Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for using green building
design, construction, operations, and maintenance. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">Other
issues like parking and handicapped accessibility were addressed with a large
paved parking lot, an elevator, and handicapped accessible restrooms.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt; mso-layout-grid-align: none; mso-pagination: none; tab-stops: .5in 1.0in 1.5in 2.0in 2.5in 3.0in 3.5in 4.0in 4.5in 5.0in 5.5in 6.0in;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-bidi-font-family: TimesNewRomanPSMT;">A
full summer season of events are planned to highlight and showcase all that
View has to offer. "Everything we do is being developed and grown,
building on a strong foundation of workshops, exhibits, and performances,"
says Hayes. "We are also able to add new areas with the addition of our
events manager and performing arts program manager."<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XxEB1WFPz1E/UNODNyzzbDI/AAAAAAAAAUo/ViH-x8O5XAM/s1600/yegift.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="137" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XxEB1WFPz1E/UNODNyzzbDI/AAAAAAAAAUo/ViH-x8O5XAM/s320/yegift.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Verdana, Helvetica, Arial;"><span style="font-size: 12.0px;">View, has received a large donation to its Moving Mountains campaign for debt retirement, which will allow it to retain the property at 3260 State Route 28 that housed the arts center for nearly 40 years. The restricted gift is for $365, 000 and is pledged over a five year period. The benefactors are a couple who have been long-time supporters of View, and they wish to remain anonymous.<br />
<br />
According to Jennifer Potter Hayes, View’s Executive Director, the gift agreement allows View to retain the deed to the property and use it for mission related activities. It is hoped that by placing the property back in productive use, it will generate additional revenue for View. <br />
<br />
The original concept for an Arts and Sciences complex on Route 28 in Old Forge included the use of the former Arts Center property in its plan. However, in early 2011, the Board of Directors of View reluctantly decided to list the property in its ongoing effort to pay down its debt. As discussions commenced with the donor in mid-2012, the Board decided not to renew its listing, but kept a For Sale by Owner sign on the property, which has now come down.<br />
<br />
“This generous and creative gift allows View to retain this property and over time develop it in a way that is compatible with our mission, at the same time freeing up funds to be used to pay down our mortgage,” says View Board President Helene McAleese. “It honors the original visionaries of this project, while assuring future generations of the best and highest use of this site. We are indebted to our benefactors for their foresight,” she said.<br />
<br />
Over the years, the donors, View Board members and staff, and community members have mentioned possible uses for all or part of this property, including a laboratory for Environmental Sciences, café and workshop space, wellness center, and senior activities center, among others. Over time, these ideas will be vetted for feasibility and compatibility with the mission of View. Community input will be welcomed.<br />
<br />
“In the meantime,” says Potter Hayes, “we plan to spruce up the building facade and grounds in the spring, and continue to use the site for storage and overflow parking, as we contemplate the future.”</span></span>

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">While
“Quilts Unlimited” is on display downstairs at View (see the blog post for Oct.
11), there is invitational quilt and other textile work upstairs. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Mary Knapp has several of her amazing quilts
on display, like this one, called “Flying Facets.”</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Here’s
what she says about it: <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;"><em>“The
original overlap of the two blocks, Flying Swallows and Facets, produces a
design that is both symmetrical and asymmetrical. The large diamonds look
completely different depending on the arrangement of the small, internal
diamonds and triangles. Machine quilting in the ditch outlines the patches.
Hand quilting throughout softens the piece. Silks and tweeds are the fabrics
used</em> <em>in this piece.”</em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Also
upstairs is work by a group called “8 That Create” (<a href="http://www.8thatcreate.com/"><span style="color: blue;">www.8thatcreate.com</span></a>). <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>These shoes are a creation by Sue Bleiweiss.

here is a series of “little black dresses” by (left to right) Jamie Fingal, Sue

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Jamie
Fingal: "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">My fiber artwork is made for the

perfection. I use vibrant colors, shapes and textures to create artwork that
invites the viewer in for a closer look. Being a rebel quilter, my style is
eclectic, a little edgy, and sometimes whimsical."</i><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Sue
Bleiweiss: "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">A lot of my work revolves
around how to create texture, both real and implied to a piece of cloth using
dye, paint and stitching. The colors and textures in rusty, weathered surfaces
fascinate me and I often use these as inspiration when I begin a new piece of
work."</i><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Leslie
Tucker Jenison: "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">I draw inspiration from
the repetitive patters, textures, and the effects of pressure in the
microscopic as well as the larger world. Utilizing paint, dye, photography, and
stitch, I create imagery to tell my stories on both cloth and paper."</i><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 12pt;">The
exhibits, both upstairs and downstairs, will close on Dec. 2. If you like classic
beauty, artful whimsy, textiles and more tiles (there are mosaic tile
sculptures by Shelly Hamill downstairs), shoes and more shoes (there are also
glass shoe sculptures by Tina Betz downstairs), and <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>incredible talent, don’t miss these exhibits!</span></div>

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">The
Charles A. Gaetano family gathered at View in Old Forge on Saturday, Oct. 13 to

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">View
executive director Jennifer Potter Hayes welcomed the Gaetano family and friends
to View and gave opening remarks. She thanked the Charles A. Gaetano
Construction Company for their patience and commitment to View and the Town of
Webb. She remarked on the craftsmanship that went into constructing and
finishing the building, including the beautiful staircase that graces the lobby
and is the centerpiece of the building. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;"></span> </div>

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">“We

<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Potter
Hayes then spoke about how the grand staircase and balcony are the centerpieces
of View.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">“From
this staircase and balcony, visitors have views of the Noonan lobby, the
courtyard, and the Mallinckrodt Garden. This staircase is the path Kinderwood
children take every day on the way to their classroom. Also, yoga ladies,
painters, photographers, our resident weaver, board members, staff, and
visitors use these stairs. Brides have been married on this landing! And all of
View’s bridal parties have used this staircase for their formal pictures. It is
a beautiful design. I will think of Connie Gaetano when I go up and down, up
and down, up and down these stairs every day,” she said. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Potter
Hayes spoke of her memories of Connie, as the “front man” at the company’s
office on Genesee Street in Utica. Connie staffed the front desk in the foyer,
and “you had to pass muster with Connie to get through,” she said.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>“It is fitting,” she continued, “that the
family chose to dedicate the grand staircase and balcony in Connie’s memory as
this may have been one of the final public projects that she worked on.” </span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">Kerry
Rogers, View board member and chair of the construction committee, also spoke.
He noted, tongue in cheek, that “the path to completion [of the building] was
not exactly conventional,“ a reference to the need to halt construction for a
period in order to raise more funds.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Rogers also said that it was his sincere pleasure to have worked with
the Gaetano team. He thanked them for their professionalism and dedication to
the project. Rogers reiterated Connie’s presence at the Gaetano company and
said that she will be missed.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; font-size: 10pt; line-height: 115%;">After
the remarks, Charles Gaetano and his six children gathered on the landing to
cut the ribbon to the staircase and balcony, followed by the unveiling of the
dedication plaque, which reads, “Grand Staircase. Given by the Charles A.
Gaetano Construction Corporation in loving memory of Connie Gaetano.”</span></div>

run through Dec. 2. This exhibition is an annual favorite that transforms the
galleries into a pleasant plethora of pattern and patchwork. Quilts are hung
gallery style and entries include both traditional and eclectic quilts and wall
hangings. Other exhibits that will open concurrently include quilts by Mary
Knapp, mixed media fiber art by 8 That Create, mosaic tile sculpture by Shelly
Hamill, and glass sculpture by Tina Betz. <br />
<br />
The opening weekend begins with a preview reception on Friday, Oct. 12, from 5
to 7 pm, and includes music, light refreshments, and a variety of quilt-related
raffles. Both on Saturday, from 10 am to 5 pm, and on Sunday, from noon to 4 pm,
there will be quilt-related vendors, demonstrations, and workshops at View. At
2 pm on Saturday, the Quilts Unlimited awards ceremony will begin, followed by
a fat quarter drawing. Enter an 18”x22” piece of fabric (fat quarter) for a
chance to win them all.<br />
<br />
The annual Quilting Lecture and Luncheon this year with Mary Knapp begins at 10
am on Saturday. Mary will present “Uniquely You,” an interactive presentation
to spark your creativity while providing insights into quilt design and
technique. She will provide examples ranging from traditional to innovative;
from hand work to machine work, and she will blend all of it together so that
the audience can develop it into their own unique style. <br />
<br />
Mary Knapp is a retired biology teacher who now teaches quilting and designs
patterns. She has earned numerous awards in a variety of quilt shows.
Mary enjoys both piecing and appliqué: machine piecing because of the
sharp precision it affords and hand appliqué because of the softness. She
has a new book, “Star Quilts” due to be released by C & T Publishing this
fall. Learn more about Mary Knapp at maryknappquilts.wordpress.com<br />

Running Colors is a 5K, fun run/walk </span><span style="font-family: "Palatino Linotype","serif"; mso-bidi-font-family: Arial;">that is focused less on speed and more on crazy
color fun with friends and family. Color runners are all different ages,

friendly powdered color. At the finish of the event, there will be a color
throwing party followed by a public picnic. Concessions will be available, or

‘Sparkle’ and ‘Glow’</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
By Miriam Kashiwa, Curator</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors</div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
It is a special moment when one may observe a painting that
seems to glow like a stained glass window; to witness a surface radiate as
though physically backlit. This experience creates questions. How can this
occur? Has the artist discovered a mystical alchemy that allows paint to
ignite?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Does this happen in all media?
Is it a property of the medium or artistic technique? Is it formula or is it choice?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
And many more questions enter the list: what is luminosity or
‘glow’ itself? Is it seen only in the chiaroscuro of classical art -- the
dramatic contrast of light and dark?<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Is
this common in contemporary art? Does this occur in watercolor?</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
To begin, there is a condition in the faces in ‘The
Nativity’ by Italian Renaissance artist Antonio Correggio’ described as chiaroscuro,<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>here, termed ‘glow.’ The painting is oil
based and comprised of subtle tonal components. Color is evident but not
primary. One hardly sees the transition from edge to edge creating the forms.
And then one notices the facial warmth as though the cheeks are breathing and
the lips are about to speak.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>One can
feel the presence of something alive. The phenomenon of ‘luminance’ by means of
modeling lights and shadow has created the appearance of a glowing third
dimension.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
There is a distinction between ‘lighted’ and luminous. When
something is ‘lighted’ a beam or ray is shined upon the object. When an object
is ‘luminous’ the glow is emitted from the inner regions of itself as a pearl
or a day-glow wand.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
In other cases of classical art, from illuminated<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>biblical pages to the magnificent frescos of
Da Vinci’s fame, artists of all genres seemed to have sought luminosity
particularly in oil based portraiture as Rembrandt’s, Tintoretto’s and other
figural painters of centuries past. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
The Impressionists
used oil or tempera paint as their media of choice.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Are there examples of luminosity in their
light-filled canvases? Or were they seeking the brightness of the out-of-doors
and the sparkle of contrast? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
Monet’s gardens and lily ponds sought engagement with light
and out-door fresh sparkle<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>whereas
Gaugin’s work<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>was more exotic and
sultry. He used warm opaque color and in so doing evoked some of the classical
notion of luminosity. His oils appeared almost pastel-like in solution.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Are palette and medium part of the condition
and is individual choice a prerequisite artistic device? </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
Toulouse-Lautrec, in painting his posters of bawdy life in
musical theater used shades of yellow to connote excitement and enhance
contrast in his figural outlines. This art was straight-forward contrast
without suggestion of glow. He produced quick, flat sketches with spare color
to sell casual Parisian nightlife as ‘glowing.’</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
In mid and late 1800’s, Sargent’s created watercolor
sketches that pale in comparison with today’s aqueous wonders of vivid, over
scale topics that range across the board. At the century’s turn, Winslow
Homer’s soft edged plein air watercolors of the Adirondacks used accents in
brilliant darks as though to push forms through the picture plane. In the
following fifty years, Charles Burchfield’s barns, fantasies and cityscapes
used darks for back-lighted form. White paper and dark ‘accents’<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>provided illumination for most watercolor
artists<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>at that time but without the
element of ‘glow’ we are seeing now. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
Leading<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>advocates for
using the paper’s white for sparkle in our own acquaintance today<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>are watercolorists Don Getz, Bus Romeling
(dec), Frank Webb and countless others.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"></span> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
There is alchemy at work here: Artistic Alchemy …the
artist-inspired solution to design<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>mixed with powers of
graphic skill: </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
‘Glow’ requires dramatically lit<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>forms against dominating areas of opaque,
dark ground: dark to light.<o:p></o:p></div>

‘Glow’ in current art is becoming more common in major
abstracts and portraiture, particularly where opaque and textured media are
used: pastel, egg tempera and oil impasto. Watercolorists will be challenged to
find texture and opacity in their fluid and transparent medium although the
‘alchemist’ can work exception.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
In short, then, we may observe that Sparkle or Glow depend
on the juxtaposition of light and dark.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Only the artist-alchemist can modulate the design and aura to create
illusion.</div>

‘Barn Raising’….we got together and built a PLACE: an oasis against an
encroaching hectic world where peace and inspiration infused by its Adirondack
setting can be savored. </div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
We now begin to ‘raise’ its walls with substance and
opportunities for learning… ‘learning’: that stuff that makes life
interesting…like the exhibition platform where artists may exchange thoughts
and ways of expressing art; like our theater where performance informs human
foibles and dreams; like music which delights and refreshes the fatigued; like
studio work-space to examine our own efforts at creativity; and like our future
Walkway through the mysteries of Nature’s wetlands.</div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0in 0in 0pt;">
As a ‘Barn Raising’ requires an army of enthusiastic
volunteers, so too has our own Arts Center required the talents of scores: from
those who contribute volunteering hands-on, to growing members and visitors,
and to generous open purses. We thank you all for being part of the Place at
VIEW. And we hope you will continue to find enjoyment and inspiration in the
‘sparkle and glow’ of this year’s Adirondacks national watercolor
exhibition.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Come often and early to
exercise your own spirit’s sense of beauty.</div>

Rufus has transformed the cello into a rock powerhouse.</span></div>
